The Outer Banks is brimming with historic, scenic and recreational attractions. The 16th century history of our nation's first settlers is celebrated on Roanoke Island through the Lost Colony Drama, Fort Raleigh and the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens. Mankind's first powered flight was also achieved just minutes away in Kill Devil Hills where Wilbur and Orville Wright's success is marked by a huge granite pylon Monument, a Museum plus recently constructed Pavilions which are all truly National treasures. No trip to the Outer Banks would be complete without visiting our trademark lighthouses, which include the oldest and the tallest on the East coast. Jockeys Ridge State Park in Nags Head delights with kites and hang gliders on the East coast's tallest natural sand dune. Charming restored US Life Saving Service Stations have been meticulously restored as museums, visitor centers and even as restaurants along the pristine coastline.
